This study examines the impact of climate change on consumer demand for financial protection. Utilizing data on U.S. natural disasters, we observe an increase in consumer complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) in areas proximal to disaster-affected zones following such events. We identify the financial value consideration of climate change as a key driver of variations in the impact of these complaints. Further analyses discount alternative explanations such as the direct physical impact of disasters, emotional venting, or declines in bank service quality. Banks proactively engaging in climate change initiatives demonstrate a marked reduction in consumer complaints, which cannot be achieved through other ESG merits. Finally, we explore the economic consequences of consumer complaints, noting that banks facing a higher volume of complaints tend to experience slower deposit growth. Overall, this work highlights the profound influence of climate change in shaping consumer preferences and influencing future financial decisions.
